“Woo-hoo! Float trip!!”  If you know what a float trip is, you know why I’m so looking forward to this weekend.  If you’re one of those poor souls who live in a part of the country where that term has no meaning, I feel truly sorry for you.  Our family is headed to the river for a relaxing day of nature appreciation, floating atop kayaks, meandering down one of the Ozarks National Scenic Riverways.  I can’t wait to get on the water and bask in the sun, just like the many turtles we’ll see lined up on partly-submerged logs; to gaze into the water below at the many fish that populate the river; to cool off in the refreshing spring-fed waters of the Current River.  But, lemme tell you: all that baskin’ and relaxin’ works up a healthy appetite, so I’m making up a big batch of snack mix to take along for the ride.  Filled with our favorite nuts, crackers, and seasonings, this snack mix is savory and satisfying.  It’s perfect for camping, road trips, parties, floating down a river, or just relaxing on the couch.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 c. wheat Chex
  • 1 c. Cherrios (we use multi-grain)
  • 1 c. mini-pretzel twists
  • 1 c. Goldfish crackers (or Cheez-its, or cheese cracker you like)
  • 1 c. rye crisps
  • 1 c. sesame sticks
  • 1 c. peanuts
  • 1 c. deluxe mixed nuts
  • 3/4 c. butter, melted
  • t. seasoned salt
  • 1/2 t. garlic salt
  • 1/2 t. ground mustard
  • 1/2 t. teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 t. teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 3 T. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 t. Tabasco

Preheat the oven to 250F. Mix together the first eight ingredients in a large bowl, tossing well to combine.

Melt the butter in a small bowl, or glass measuring cup, and stir in all of the seasonings, making sure there aren’t any clumps. Drizzle half of the seasoned butter over the mix and toss to coat.  Repeat with the second half of the butter mixture.

Spread out onto a rimmed baking sheet and bake for one and a half to two hours, tossing every 20 minutes.

Allow to cool before storing in an air tight container.
