I well remember those feelings. My dog Blackie was a stray who became my dog when I was a teenager on a farm. Blackie was a free roaming dog who would never have adapted to “city” life when Dad sold the farm and we moved to town. He passed enjoying a freshly given bone watching his friend and companion, me, with my trusty 22 single shot rifle. Oh the tales I could tell of the times he “treed” something and waited for me to “come see”! One time it was a full grown cougar!
There have been other dogs since that time, but each of them were euthanized when their “time came” by vets. “Doing it” myself was just too difficult.

My son and I both have 3 pits. At this time we are rotating the dogs so everyone gets a vacation in the country. When we seem the combination of dogs coming to a heightened frenzy, poof its time to rotate them. I know that one day this isn’t going to work any more.

I love each one of them with all my heart but our first is my special girl. Your story reminded me so much of her and our relationship. Though she is still healthy and full of life, I can’t help but think of the day that will inevitably come. I won’t let anyone else do it but me. It just wouldn’t be right. I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like when she’s gone. But as Lloyd said, it’s just the price we pay for love. The great thing is, its always worth it.
