Big fan of both Stout and Fukuoka! I've evolved, mostly intuitively, into a mostly mulch gardener myself, using mainly grass clippings and some straw. For those interested in an additional twist in the "less work" methods of growing food, I highly recommend Charles Dowding's explanations and explorations of the No-Dig method. His You-Tube channel is excellent, as are his books. My biggest takeaway from all of the above, apart from the pleasure of finding less strenuous ways to get excellent results, is how very, very destructive of the soils microbial life it is to dig, turn, and plow the soil.

Lovely article. I have had Ruth's "Gardening without Work" on my bookshelf for years and it has inspired many a happy argument with my husband of over our 50 years of marriage. Though we never fight over money or the in-laws we often divide our garden into HIS and HERS sections. The question I have is: What happened to Ruth's garden? Was it preserved? Is it still going?
Thank you, Dora Bilton, dora@columbiawireless.ca
